Class 4
Happy Summer Term!! The summer term is always an exciting one, packed with creativity, curiosity and confidence-building. Here’s a little snapshot of what we will be learning across the curriculum over the coming weeks.
Our English work will centre around powerful texts that celebrate bravery and being true to yourself. A key text is The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, which inspires thoughtful discussion and rich writing. Children will explore character, viewpoint and themes, producing their own creative and reflective writing.
This term’s maths is all about real-life application: decimals and percentages (Year 5 focus), money and time and finally, shape and volume. Children will be encouraged to reason, problem-solve and explain their thinking, helping them grow in confidence and fluency.
Our scientists this term, will investigate different materials and their properties, as well as solids, liquids and gases. Through hands-on experiments, children will observe changes, make predictions and deepen their scientific thinking.
This term, Class 4 are embracing their inner geographer as we’ll be comparing where we live with contrasting localities, focusing on population and settlement. This term, we’ll zoom out to explore South America, learning about its countries, physical features and human geography. Expect lots of map work and fascinating facts!
This term in Art, we’ll be exploring sculpture and 3D art. Children will experiment with different materials and techniques to create meaningful pieces inspired by memories and experiences. They’ll learn how artists use shape, texture and structure to tell a story, and will finish the unit with their own unique 3D creations that hold memories for them!
In computing, pupils will become digital designers! They’ll learn how to edit photos safely and responsibly, using tools to crop, adjust and enhance images. Along the way, we’ll discuss how images can be changed and why digital awareness is important, a great mix of creativity and online safety skills.
Our budding engineers will design and make mechanical posters using levers, sliders and linkages. Children will follow the design process: researching, planning, building and evaluating.
In French, we’ll be learning how to talk about family. Pupils will practise speaking, listening and writing in short sentences, building confidence with pronunciation and simple grammatical structures, all through songs, games and conversation.
In music this term, I think we will have some happy musicians as we’ll be studying Blackbird by The Beatles!! We will be exploring rhythm, melody and meaning. Music lessons will also support rehearsals for our amazing summer play, where teamwork, performance skills and confidence will truly shine.
In PE, pupils will develop their skills in athletics, focusing on running, jumping and throwing, as well as learning badminton, where hand–eye coordination, teamwork and resilience are key. All skills that I’m sure will come in very handy for our upcoming sports day!
As we get close to year 5 and 6 for some of our children in class 4, we will be focusing on growing and changing in PSHE. Through open discussion and activities, children will learn about responsibility, personal choices and the changes that come with growing up. Lessons are age-appropriate and focus on emotional wellbeing, respect and independence.
In RE, we’ll explore Humanism, learning what Humanists believe about life, values and morality. Children will compare these ideas with other worldviews and reflect thoughtfully on what guides people’s choices.
It’s a busy and brilliant term ahead, filled with lots of fun and hands-on activities, I can’t wait to share the children’s progress with you!
