Class 1
Welcome back to all our Class 1 families. We are excited for a busy and enjoyable summer term ahead, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor learning.
We began the term with a fantastic visit to Backswood Farm, where the children explored habitats and life cycles. It was a wonderful day of hands‑on learning in beautiful surroundings. Back in school, we now have our very own caterpillars, which the children are observing closely. We are eagerly awaiting the moment we can release them as butterflies. We have also started planting a variety of seeds and learning about what plants need to grow and how to care for them.
Our topic this term, ‘On an Adventure’, focuses on our local area and our school. The children will be exploring the features that make Bickleigh village and Bickleigh School so special. We will be studying maps of the local area, including maps of the school grounds and even our classroom. Treasure hunts, local walks, and identifying physical and human features will all form part of our learning. We will also be practising simple map skills, including using a compass and locating north, south, east, and west.
In Maths,
- Year 1 will be working with numbers within 50: recognising and counting numbers to 50, counting in tens, understanding the composition of these numbers, partitioning into tens and ones, finding 1 more/1 less, and using a number line to estimate.- Reception will be working with numbers within 20: verbal counting, understanding number composition, recognising numerals, representing numbers with objects, and identifying 1 more/1 less. We will then move on to simple, practical addition and subtraction within 10.
In Literacy, the children will continue learning in their Read Write Inc. groups, and reading books will be sent home at the end of each unit. Year 1 children will also be taking part in the Phonics Screening Check in early June. Through Drawing Club, we will enjoy a range of high‑quality stories, immersing ourselves in rich vocabulary, and using our imaginations to invent, draw and write our own ‘codes’.
In R.E., we will be exploring the question: Why is the word ‘God’ important for Christians? We hope to fit in a visit to the village Church.
In P.E., our focus will be on developing ball skills and taking part in games in preparation for Sports Day.
During outdoor learning we will be exploring how the seasons change, identifying and naming some common wildflowers, naming parts of a flower/plant and discovering living things during pond dipping activities.
Please use Tapestry to see weekly learning updates, share wonderful home learning experiences and to ask any questions you may have.
