Class 2

Welcome back to school, we hope you have had a restful and enjoyable summer break.

Class 2 have been settling into their classroom and learning areas and are looking forward to what’s ahead this Autumn Term. We start with the topics ‘The United Kingdom’ and ‘Animals’ in Geography and Science respectively. The children will learn about the different countries that make up the UK and improve their map and fieldwork skills. In science lessons we will be learning about the 5 senses, the different species and categories of animals, including humans. Class 2 will be leading the Harvest Service at the church in the village this term.

After Half Term, the build up to, (whisper it), Christmas, begins with RE work asking the question ‘Why is Christmas important to Christians?’ and the usual exciting art projects and play rehearsals with Class 3 leading us up to the Christmas play towards the end of term! We will also learn about Muslim traditions and their place of worship.

Maths this term will start with place value and addition and subtraction, with year 1 focussing on numbers to 10. Lessons start with a ‘know it’ activity, then if the children are confident, they can move on to ‘deepen it’ challenges with more reasoning and problem-solving. Class 2 will also look at shape just before Christmas.

In phonics lessons, children will work in their Read Write Inc groups where reading books will be sent home at the end of each book ‘unit’. Later in the term we will rejoin again as a class to study other texts and explore whole-class guided reading.

In Music lessons we will follow the Charranga curriculum as well as learning songs for our Christmas pro duction. The children will use instruments to help identify the beat and will start to recognise the changes in timbre, dynamics and pitch.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) this term will focus on Our World and The Working World. We will also explore what bullying is and how we can help prevent it during Anti-Bullying Week and Odd Socks Day in November.

Class 2 will explore the uses of ICT/computing to support their learning using the Teach Computing curriculum as well as using class ICT in the form of educational games, using the Chrome books, ipads and beebots to support other curriculum subjects. As a whole class, we will also be watching videos and using interactive websites to help us answer questions about our work across our topics.

Class 2 children will also have access to Continuous Provision, with opportunities around the class room and other learning spaces that will support their educational needs and link to the formal learn ing taking place in different curriculum subjects.
