Class 5
Our Topic focus this term will be biomes: this is the magical world of the tundra to the savannah, from ice worlds to freshwater paradises. We will begin by exploring what makes a biome, and finding them on maps. This will build towards understanding how fragile there are and how human and non-human processes can change these. For instance, Britain sits entirely in a temperature forest/ woodland biome. This can be a little deceiving at first because obviously the whole of Britain is not a woodland – but much of it used to be before man-made forest clearing long, long before written records were kept on these isles. Some places in the UK, such as Dartmoor, carry the characteristics more often found in tundra: this will be a discussion point to understand how geography is a discipline where it is difficult to categorise!
In Literacy, our reading will explore The Invention of Hugo Cabret - a beautifully illustrated book to help the children improve their inference skills. It is a wonderful book which will get their imaginations going!
In Maths, we will become proficient will all the basic calculation skills required. And, now we have learnt that, will look at applying them in real world situations. We will look at the blending of speed and accuracy as we commit these facts to memory. Ratio, algebra and higher level fractions skills will be secured as well.
