Class 1
We are excited to share an overview of the learning planned for this Spring term.
This Half Term: ‘Winter Wonderland’
Our topic is Winter Wonderland. We have already begun exploring the seven continents and locating Antarctica on maps and globes. The children will learn that Antarctica is the coldest and windiest place on Earth and discover some of the animals that live there, such as penguins, orca whales, and seals.
A highlight will be a live online session with Steve Backshall, who will share fascinating insights about this unique part of the world. We will also compare penguin habitats in Antarctica with those in other countries, including UK zoos, and learn about the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to Antarctica.
In our outdoor learning sessions, we will investigate seasonal changes and weather. Activities will include using rain gauges to measure rainfall, making bark rubbings, creating wind streamers, and observing the spring bulbs we planted in the autumn as they begin to grow.
Our focus stories this half term are:
Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers
And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson & Peter Parnell
The Snow Thief by Alice Hemming & Nicola Slater
In PE, we will be exploring movement and expression through dance.
Next Half Term: ‘If You Go Down to the Woods Today’
Our topic will shift to If You Go Down to the Woods Today. We will enjoy stories such as:
Stanley’s Stick by John Hegley and Neal Layton
The Sea Saw by Tom Percival
Where’s My Teddy? by Jez Alborough
We will learn about the celebration of Easter and, if all goes well, incubate eggs to observe the lifecycle of a chicken. We will also explore the Chinese New Year festival and how it is celebrated.
Maths:
Reception: We will focus on numbers within 10—subitising, matching, identifying, counting, and ordering. Later, we will explore measurement (length, height, and time) and 3D shapes.
Year 1: Our focus will be on place value within 20, including counting, ordering, finding 1 more/1 less, and comparing numbers. We will then move on to addition and subtraction within 20, place value within 50, and measurement (length and height).
We are looking forward to an exciting and engaging term of learning! Thank you for your continued support.
